As longtime Eagles singer-songwriter Jackson Browne said, this song likely refers to Cain from the Bible, who was doomed to walk the earth for eternity because he killed his brother. If you look at songs like „where I may roam“ by Metallica, it`s very similar to Cain`s „freedom.“ (Freedom that few people speak) – that is, Cain never forgives himself, so he does not let anyone love him.
