Urban Agriculture Definition Presence Potentials and Risks

SUMMARY: In the near future, urban agriculture will not be the same as it was in the past or today. The different forms and contexts in which agricultural activities take place can have different effects on the value of urban agriculture. Information about where urban agriculture should be practised and the exact value of urban agriculture is implicit. This study examines the factors that characterize the changing nature and value of urban agriculture in Arusha as one of Tanzania`s rapidly urbanizing cities. It uses two specifically selected case study areas in Arusha City, namely Daraja Mbili and Lemala districts. A total of 60 respondents participated in in-depth interviews. The study shows that limited access to areas ideal for urban agriculture has led some farmers to acquire small portions of land in illegal areas for this purpose. As a result, the number of animals kept is limited and crops are those that take little time to grow, but are less able to meet the food needs of farmers and city dwellers. It also shows that the majority of farmers whose land is secured in one way or another can meet their food and income needs through agriculture.

However, uncontrolled agricultural practices have, on the one hand, accelerated environmental degradation and pollution, and their role in securing the livelihoods of farmers in need cannot be underestimated. The study argues that urban agriculture cannot take place if farmers do not have adequate access to agricultural land. Nor can it take place within the weak institutional framework that can guide its activities without endangering other urban land uses.
