Today, we want to recognize and shout that the killing of black citizens by law enforcement, the people hired to protect and defend, is a scourge of epic proportions. The pain and sorrow of families, the loss of precious lives, the bubbling soul that steals anger, the death of trust, the brutal realization that justice is not available to you, your friends, sons and daughters, deprive our communities of their ability to realize their value and unique contribution. BAJI believes that a thriving multiracial democracy requires racial, social and economic justice for all. African Americans and black immigrants are stronger together and we can win by becoming leaders in the fight against structural racism and systemic discrimination. BAJI was founded to bring together black voices to advocate for equality and justice in our laws and communities. We have meditated and prayed, spoken and shared, and now we write to express our ongoing commitment to the Black people we serve, work with, and work with. During his law studies, Marbre focused on the intersection of criminal justice and civil rights, gaining legal experience with the Bronx Defenders, the Equal Justice Initiative and the Prison Policy Initiative. Prior to law school, Marbre earned his Master`s degree in African Studies from Oxford University and worked in Zimbabwe to organize communities affected by violence, then taught at Nelson Mandela`s alma mater in South Africa.
