They are social animals that make them an excellent candidate for a pet as long as their needs are properly met. Fennek foxes can even be trained with enough patience! Expect to spend a lot of time and effort keeping your Fennec trained. They are fast, active and agile animals. Fortunately, many fennecs adapt to their human`s schedule instead of staying nocturnal. Fennecs can be trained to walk on a leash, which helps them release some of their energy each day.
While undoubtedly cute, fennec foxes are indeed noisy and energetic creatures. While they can adapt to a life with humans, they represent a lot of work for their owners, who must be committed to giving these big-eared friends the right kinds of exercise, nutrition, and veterinary care. It is important that you buy your fennec from a reputable breeder or rescue organization. While the chances are slim that you`ll find a seller of wild-caught fennecs in the United States, it`s still important to make sure your fennec was bred in captivity. These animals generally adapt much better to life in captivity than an animal that previously lived in the wild. However, just because no permit is required to keep a red fox doesn`t mean you don`t have a legal obligation. Captive foxes are subject to the restrictions of the Animal Welfare Act of 1911 (with various amendments).
